Considering them as teams 1 through 12;

The team one matches are:
(1,2)(1,3)(1,4)(1,5)(1,6)(1,7)(1,8)(1,9)(1,10)(1,11)(1,12)
Giving 11 matches total.

Now count the team two matches, but don't count (1,2) again! That match has already been played.
(2,3)(2,4)(2,5)(2,6)(2,7)(2,8)(2,9)(2,10)(2,11)(2,12)
Giving 10 matches more

Now count the team three matches, but don't count (3,1) or (3,2) again.

Keep going until you count the team 11 matches. That will just be (11,12) since you will have counted all of the other team 11 matches already.
When you get to 12, there are no more to count.
