In an intext quotation, when one is quoting a sentence that ends in either an exclamation point or a question mark, one includes that inside the quotation marks. Should one also put a period after the parenthetical citation, which is in parentheses?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes if it is inside the sentence a period should go after

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sometimes as well as inside depending on what is inside the parentheses Can you give me an example?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you. Where can I find this in print? I saw one example but with no explanation on p. 14 under MLA endnotes and footnotes. It shows in example 4, " In a 1998 interview, she reiterated this point even more strongly: "I am an artist, not a politician!" If a student were quoting this exact sentence, he or she would change the original quotation marks to single marks, ithin their own quotation marks, correct? In quoting poetry, one handout said, on p. 12 under long quotations , "Your parenthetical citation should come after the closing punctuation mark", but that is a different issue.

John said," Patrick Henry once said,'Give me liberty,or give me death!'. He fought for freedom."

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If I were quoting John's quotation of Patrick Henry, and I need to include the parenthetical citation in parentheis, would I then put a period after the citation?

I was really searching for clarification on the MLA handouts of the Owl website. I do know how to punctuate sentences, but was seeking an in-print confirmation on the punctuation flowwing the parenthetical citation.
