Using figurative language brings in colors, shapes, flavors... each of these things will have an emotional reaction from your reader, depending on their culture of origin. If I write, "Your smile was a blue whisper, passing too quickly against my soul." that's sad... blue in that sense is cold, distant, sad... but if I say, "Your smile was the sun, vibrant and burning, brushing too quickly against my soul." Then it's more longing, warmth, interest...
