I want to start working on an open source project, what are the steps i need to follow in order to do so. I am a beginner to open source , never done it before . :)

OpenStudy (espex):

Open source just references the licensing structure so all that is required of you would be to start programming. If you are looking for a place to distribute your software, and assuming it is for the PC, then a good place to start would be http://sourceforge.net/

It'd be the easiest to help the development team of an existing project. I'd suggest you to go to a website like http://ww.freecode.com/ or http://sourceforge.net/ and look for a project that you're interested in. If you've found an interesting project, find out what language is used and if you're not familiar with that language, search for some tutorials. Most projects will have a page on their website giving some advice on how to get started. Or you could search the bug tracker for some easy bugs to fix. Of course, subscribe to the project's maillinglist and ask around there.
