Math HELP!!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Dom wrote the following steps to simplify the expression (x − y + 5y). Step 1: x + 5y − y; using commutative property of addition Step 2: x + (5y − y); using associative property of addition Step 3: x − (5 + 1)y; using distributive property of addition Step 4: x − (6)y; simplifying Which step was incorrect, and what should be the correct step that Dom should use? Answer Step 2 was incorrect. Correct step: x − (5y − y); using associative property of addition Step 3 was incorrect. Correct step: x − (−5 − 1)y; using distributive property of addition Step 3 was incorrect. Correct step: x + (5 − 1)y; using distributive property of addition Step 2 was incorrect. Correct step: x + (5y + y); using associative property of addition

Parth (parthkohli):

The 3rd one: Step 3 was incorrect. Correct step: x + (5 − 1)y; using distributive property of addition. Do you know why?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Why?

Parth (parthkohli):

It's because distributive property doesn't involve the change of signs. Notice how he put '+' instead of '-'

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol that made a funny face XD

OpenStudy (anonymous):

'+'

OpenStudy (anonymous):

'_'

OpenStudy (anonymous):

See?

Parth (parthkohli):

Hahahahahaa correct.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks again!

Parth (parthkohli):
