.You live in Carson City, Nevada, which has approximate (latitude, longitude) coordinates of (39N, 120W). Your friend lives in Ottawa, Ohio, with coordinates of (41N, 84W). You plan to meet halfway between the two cities. Find the coordinates of the halfway point. can someone help me with this?

OpenStudy (apoorvk):

well, you got two coordinates. Use the midpoint formula

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you tell me wht that is omg im sorry i dont know this.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[\sqrt{(41-39)^{2}+(84-120)^{2}}/2\] I think !

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it's the hard way whene you find the long mak an equation to find the cordonates

OpenStudy (anonymous):

omg that big thing okay so i do whats under the check arrow right? and my mind just went blank again.

OpenStudy (apoorvk):

@badi that is trhe distance formula for the distance between two points. @tally for any two points (x,y) and (y,y') the midpoint M(X,Y) has the coordinates: \[(X,Y) = (\frac{x+x'}{2} , \frac{y+y'}{2})\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so basically 2 squared + -36 squared divided by 2?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeh apoorvk that best way i FORGET IT thenks but do you understand my way ,?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes i understand both ways but like is that all i do?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so its 39+41/2 and 120+84/2 for yours apoorvk and for bandi its 2 squared and -36 squared /2 ?

OpenStudy (apoorvk):

tally, you have the coordinates with you. (imagine North as the positive Y-axis and East as the positive X-axis on a graph) so the two points are (39,120) and (41,84). Now look upto the formula. @badi distance formula here helps determine the 'distance' each has to travel from their respective places, but not the 'coordinate' of the point where they meet.

OpenStudy (apoorvk):

Tally, almost correct, just the minus sign in the W-coordinates.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay so we meet at 59.9,162 and minus sign ? uh oh i did it wrong then?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh wait okay so you minus in the w okay so its 78 then for w

OpenStudy (apoorvk):

everything's right. just mention 'W'. a negative denotes West, since East is the positive direction by convention. but since you have the direction coordinates you don't need the minus sign.

OpenStudy (apoorvk):

40N, 102W is the right answer.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how did you get that answer explian what you did?

OpenStudy (apoorvk):

N --> (39+41)/2 W--> (120+84)/2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh crap i just got that lol. thx

OpenStudy (apoorvk):

Yw.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i thought it was 40N and 101W ^
