The ability to type an equation already exists if you already know the LaTeX. The decision not to include them was made before my time. @shadowfiend or @darthsid will have to enlighten us as to the reasoning they were left out. :)

I was actually wondering the same thing the other day when I posted up a math question haha. A pretty simple solution is to just add a comment onto your own question with whatever files / equations you want, though I do see why it might be a minor nuisance.

Integrating those capabilities into the UI for asking questions is non-trivial, as there is already a lot going on there. We do have it in the back of our minds, however.
