Find the lateral surface area of a cube if each side is 36 inches.

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

The surface area of a cube is the surface area of each side (x^2), and there are 6 sides to a cube so SA=6x^2

Lateral surface area

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Would you just subtract two bases?

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

What is the difference? What do you mean by lateral surface area?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Lateral surface area does not include the base

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Or do I just subtract one base?

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

Oh, you mean only the surface area of the 4 sides? What about the top?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

?

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

Oh. This website ( http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080126004307AALYvrO) says the lateral surface area only includes the 4 sides. So the lateral surface area = 4x^2
