If there is a counter example and then you show that the statement is wrong. Usually I've seen this done you show a theorem has two possibilities and you cut one of those possibilities by showing a counter example.

Showing an example works doesn't prove a theorem is correct it just shows that the theorem works for that specific example but then you can never be sure if the theorem is correct but you can show it it's not correct with a counter example.

I've also seen this used in limits.
