M-theory is a particular brand of string theory, at least to my knowledge, it supposedly combines gravity and quantum physics together by saying that there are 11 dimensions of reality and that everything isn't made up of particles or waves, but really they're little vibrating strings that oscillate at different frequencies. Those frequencies are what give particles and waves their properties, but I have never been able to find more than just a few people explain it and have never seen the math behind it, but it's supposed to be clever.
