Engineering: When solving for the quadratic equation, would you prefer the solution in radicals, or an arbitrary precision approximate solution?

My argument: irrational numbers turn up in real life and you hav eto approximate them if you want to get anywhere.
His argument: We don't have to let them be irrational.
