how do fossils last so long

Fossils last a longtime because when the animal dies and it's body decays, the sediment around them preserves their bones by turning them into stone.

Sorry if it's not a very much explained answer but that's what I remember from learning about fossils. I could probably find you a more explain answer online if you want me to.

They're also preserved in Sedimentary Rock. c: Sedimentary rock builds up layers and layer and then it becomes rockish. :D Haha. Igneous rock comes from magma and stuff. So it's not like a fossil could form there. Metamorphic rock can be changed by pressure and temperatures, so not many fossils would be found in there because of the changes. So yeah. Sedimentary is cool like that. :D

Fossils are the remains of part of an organism or whole organism which was preserved accidentally by several means and do not decay. The most common cause of decomposition of any organism or living matter is the activity of microorganism (decompose rs). When any material which is under the pressure of rocks or do not come in contact with air or microorganism by any mean which may be coal ball, resins of trees, sediments etc then its chances of being decompose fall to a minimum level. That's why they remain buried for a long time.
