How does the Department of Defense Protect the security of our country?
I need three things that they do to help protect the US. Can somebody find a cite of know of a cite I can go to because I've looked and cannot find one

1. Military deterrence. The mere existence of a large, well-trained, well-equipped fighting force deters potential aggressors. Roughly speaking, if you carry a big stick, fewer muggers will even think about trying to steal your purse.

2. Military intelligence. The military keeps careful watch on the activities and capabilities of potential enemies, both openly and through secret methods. Knowing the capabilities and intentions of other nations enables the President to conduct foreign policy more smoothly and effectively. For example, if the military knows that the North Korean's threat to fire a missile at Japan (an important ally we are obliged to protect) is entirely empty -- because they lack the capability to really do it -- it allows the President to respond in a much lower-key fashion, and keep tensions lower.

3. Humanitarian aid. The US military is the largest and fastest provider of emergency aid to regions struck by natural disaster, including the Banda Aceh tsunami, the Bam earthquake in Iran some years ago, and so on. This is because they have the capability to go places very fast, deploy a lot of trained and disciplined men, and can do all this without any infrastructure support at all (e.g. they don't need to be supplied with food and fuel, because they bring their own). These kinds of direct humanitarian aid promotes a positive interaction between the United States and other countires, and helps to reduce misunderstandings and international tension -- which contribute to the security of the United States.
