She had leukemia, and died from it. She was trying to fold 1000 paper cranes, because in Japanese myth, if you fold a thousand cranes, you get a wish, and she wanted to wish to get better. However, she died before she could finish it, and her classmates completed the thousand for her, and she was buried with all thousand.
