William McKinley (1843-1901), elected 25th President of the United States in 1896, was the last to fight in the Civil War. He was succeeded by Theodore Roosevelt, who was only 3 when the Civil War began. All of the previous Presidents back to Lincoln served with the exception of Grover Cleveland, who hired a surrogate to serve for him (which was not uncommon in those days). Chester Arthur, however, did not see actual fighting but served behind the lines as a quartermaster. You can find short biographies of all the Presidents at www.whitehouse.gov.
