Two objects in contact are in thermal equilibrium if their particles possess the same average kinetic energy. True False

OpenStudy (anonymous):

True. The equipartition theorem, which can be proved from very general arguments in classical statistical mechanics, says that at equilibrium the average kinetic energy of each particle in a system is equal to (3/2) kT, where k is Boltzmann's constant. Equal temperatures implies equal kinetic energy per particle.
