Throughout American history, there has been vigorous debate about balancing "accountability" and "independence" in designing a judicial system. What arguments do you find most relevant in this debate, and how do you come out with regard to the contending positions? What arguments from "the other side" give you most pause, and why do you ultimately disagree with them? To what degree would your answer require changing any important features of 1) the federal judiciary and 2) the Texas judicial system (or the judicial system of any other particular state you may wish to discuss)?
