I've read the novel. Simon is the voice of reason, he is the goodness within the human. He was the one that discovered that there actually was no beast, and that it all was in their head. He also got killed in the end/middle of the book by Jack and his tribe when they wanted to kill the beast and mistook simon for the beast.
