now to complete the square we look at the middle number which is -1 divide by 2 then square it to get 1/4 so let us add 1/4 and subtract 1/4 to get

x^2 -x +1/4 - 1/4 -1 =0 and now if we just factor x^2 -x +1/4 we get (x-1/2)^2

so let us sub this in to get (x-1/2)^2 = 1/4 + 1 --> (x-1/2)^2=5/4 :)
