when -> around 1950s
what -> blues, jazz, country and gospel
why -> unknown

Important figure/s i would say Elvis Presley because of his huge contributions to the genre (most notably his *unusual* performances) and he is King after all...but we could not forget the contribution of The Beatles. They are the most influential band in the history of music. They did not just shape rock and roll, but also other genres of music. They opened gates of possibilities to rock (i.e. the use of a sitar (!!!) )
