An acid is: a.a proton acceptor b.any substance that reacts to keep blue litmus blue c.any compound containing hydrogen d.a proton donor e.a compound having hydrogen as a cation and oxygen as an anion

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think its either c or e

OpenStudy (blues):

It helps if you say why you think it is C or E. I actually think it is neither C nor E. An acid is anything which can donate a proton.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i thought it was c or e .... because my book talked about A type of compound that contains hydrogen and dissociates in water to .. so i thought it could be those

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks so much though:

OpenStudy (blues):

It is how your book words it. A hydrogen atom has one proton and one electron. Sometimes the electron gets taken away, leaving just the proton. So hydrogen atom without its electron = proton. When hydrogen dissociates in water, it forms a proton. So in your book you can cross out "hydrogen" and write in "proton." For purposes of this discussion.

ohhh ok.... yeah, totally will:) thank you!!!

OpenStudy (blues):

Not a prob. :D
