How does random fertilization add to the genetic variation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Everyone has different genes or dna, everyone is different hair color, eye color..

Sperm and egg divide by mitosis. During mitosis there is independent assortment and crossing over of chromosomes. So each sperm and egg cell is genetically different from their parent. When fertilization happens, there are many possible combinations of which sperm (each of which is genetically different) will fertilize the egg, which adds even greater genetic variation.
