The diagram below shows the map of a mine.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How deep is the mine shaft? Answer 6 tan 20˚ 6 cos 20˚

OpenStudy (anonymous):

other answer choices are: 6/sin20 degrees 6/tan 20 degrees

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what is tangent

OpenStudy (anonymous):

um...Tangent Function: tan(θ) = Opposite / Adjacent

OpenStudy (anonymous):

alright so looking at your picture what are your givens and your x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

6km 20 degrees

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x idk

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so you have \[\theta = 20\] \[A=adjacent=6\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and what are you trying to find?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

BC

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the opposite I think

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes your opposite angle is always opposite of your angle

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if you name the opposite angle x and put it into your tangent equation you should get...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

D I think

OpenStudy (anonymous):

70 degree

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not the answer choice

OpenStudy (anonymous):

using tan(theta)=X/a

OpenStudy (anonymous):

70 is not correct

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but sin formula is also applicable ... just tell the unknown angle

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm confused :?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

6/tan 20 degrees?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

known: \[\theta=20\] \[o=?=x\] \[a=6\] given: \[\tan(\theta)=\frac{o}{a}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah

OpenStudy (anonymous):

alright so plug everything in you should get \[\tan(20)=\frac{x}{6}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now to get x by itself you'd need to...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

aha!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its 6 tan 20˚

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

pls bare with my stupidity

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OMG I got it?!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks! :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yap you did it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i'm assuming that 6tan(20)=70 which is where annas got his answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol I expected him to say WRONG lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks guys!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no i was using a/sinA = c/sinC and answers are same i was just telling about the unknown angle by 180-(90+20)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

answer is 2.1 if u simplify it ...
