why was it bad that smaug in the hobbit knew that Bilbo was the "barrel rider"?

OpenStudy (anonymous):
It means that Smaug had heard of Bilbo, and knew somewhat what he was capable of, which gave Smaug the advantage over Bilbo. This also meant that others knew of Bilbo, and this could bring future trouble between him and his previous captors (their names escape me), that he used the barrels to escape from.
