OpenStudy (anonymous):

The velocity at which a planet travels does not remain constant throughout its orbit. As it gets closer to the Sun in its orbit, a planet tends to speed up a little. Why do you think this occurs?

OpenStudy (blues):

As the planet gets closer into the sun's gravitational field, the strength of the gravitational field increases. So as the forces on the planet increase it accelerates.

OpenStudy (blues):

F = ma.
