The abondoned house echo effect. At work someone was saying he notices that when you walk into abandoned house or building it has an echo. However if people live in the same exact house but no one was there and you just got home that same exact house wont have an echo. IDK if it is true but he says he experienced it for himself. If it is true why would an abandoned house have an echo but same house with people living there just not there at the time not have an echo? Also he said all the furniture and stuff is there it isn't an empty room.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

because its empty an the sound waves bounce off of the walls instead of being intturputed by all the furniture and stuff

OpenStudy (anonymous):

maybe it's all the in the mind?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

there is furniture and stuff in the abandoned house too Shawna

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh hmm i thought it was empty . hmm

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I am thinking maybe in the abandoned house it could be the layer of dust that amplifies sound more.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeaah probably

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but i think dust actually dampens sound :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

idk haa but a good question lol

My other theory i call it the pool theory If you have a pool and it is empty the water is so still and you throw a rock at it you can see the waves bounce back when they reach the walls of the pool. However if there is people in pool the water is chaotic you wont notice any clarity in the waves bouncing back. An abandoned house's echo could be treated as the still water. When you walk in you make a disturbance and it bounces back nicely. However, in a house full of people you wont notice the echo cuzz of the interference from all the other noises. MAYBE IDK LOL just something that came up at work :)

My guess is that there is not an actual difference between the two scenarios, but rather just a perceived difference. When you walk into an abandoned house, you expect it to seem abandoned, so you will perceive things that fit with that mental picture.

Mind tricks could be it :)

OpenStudy (apoorvk):

@timo86m that is one brilliant explanation you came up with. mind tricks do accentuate the effect as well.

Why is it brilliant?
