The independent variable is the salt, the concentration of the salt being added, and the dependent variable is the freezing point of water as the latter will change depending on the amount of salt added. Now, the controlled variables are those variables which need to be constant so as to make sure that the only thing affecting the freezing point is the amount of salt added. This includes pressure, the volume of water to which the salt is being added, the type of container being used (metals, plastics, polystyrene etcc..) etcc...
