Please explain what is the use of refractive index?

It tells you how much light will bend towards the normal http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Snells_law.svg and http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/math/6/f/8/6f80b79c28a3b01428480aaa54669dc8.png how much it bends depends of the material it is going into (each material has a refractive index) and out of (and the angle it comes in to the normal of the surface at.
