how did niccolo machiavelli's book the prince set him apart from other writers of the renaissance?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Not many writers have inspired the kind of personal hatred that Machiavelli has throughout the centuries, and few works have been as popular as The Prince. Machiavelli has been condemned as a defender of tyranny, a godless promoter of immorality, and a self-serving manipulator.

The prince was a unique book because it provided a different view of a perfect ruler. While other writers focused on a kind, benevolent ruler, Machiavelli showed a different kind of perfect ruler, one who should been feared rather than love.
