Lea made two candles in the shape of right rectangular prisms. The first candle is 15 cm high, 8 cm long, and 8 cm wide. The second candle is 5 cm higher but has the same length and width. How much additional wax was needed to make the taller candle? A 320 cm3 B 640 cm3 C 960 cm3 D 1280 cm3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5*8*8=320

OpenStudy (anonymous):

why?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

additional wax is the additional volume r8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok but i still don't understand why it's 5 times eight?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

given the second one is 5 units higer r8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok. so just one more question, how do you find the volumes of the prisms?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

volume of any solid body is area of crossection multiplied with depth

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no i mean like, a formula? like Total area is equal to lateral area plus 2 times the base area? how do you find the lateral area?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

for a rectangular prism u got to find the area of each face and add em alll......u get the lateral area

OpenStudy (anonymous):

uh ok but is there like a specific formula? (ie TA= LA+2B ?)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

beh never mind. thanks anyway! :)
