The distance from Albany, New York , to the epicenter of this earthquake is 5600 km. Approximately how much longer did it take for the S wave to arrive at Albany than the P wave ? a. 7 minutes and 10 seconds b. 9 minutes and 0 seconds c. 16 minutes and 10 seconds
The answer is A. To solve this problem you have to go to your Earth Science Reference Tables and find the Earthquake P-Wave and S-Wave Travel Time page (page 11). Then you have to go to the bottom of the chart and use the distance 5600 which they gave you, After that you have to go straight up to where the lines are. The "top" line is the S-Wave and the "bottom" line is the P-Wave. After you have done that you have to find where the line intersects the 5600 distance mark. The P-Waves travel time is 9 minutes and the S-Waves travel time is 16 minutes and ten seconds. Lastly you subtract the P-Wave from the S-Wave and get 7 minutes and 10 seconds, answer number two. I really hope this helped and by the way was this a regents question. "DerrkJeter96 http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20100621121048AAJnUsG?
