What do the lines in this problem mean? |-20|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

absolute value

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Those probably represent absolute value. Absolute value of a number means: if the number is greater than 0, leave it alone, if it is less than zero, take its negative.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's absolute value, so it's the number's distance from zero on a standard number line. So -20 would be 20 units away from zero

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So I take the negative away and make it positive ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yupp and if it were a positive number, it would just stay the same

I ok thx!:). I'm studying for an exam
