I think if you really want to be a moderator you should do the following:
1) Don't ask to be a mod
2) Be an OpenStudy member for a good amount of time
3) Follow the Code of Conduct
4) Get in good with the community
5) Be an awesome helper

Also if the OpenStudy team is looking for moderators and they are interested in you, then they will approach you. You don't need to approach them.

@cutecats I'm sorry that you feel as though we're not moderating the site, but believe it or not moderating OpenStudy isn't our full-time job. We all chip in and help moderate the site *in addition to* our regular jobs. Sometimes we miss stuff, but that's the reason for the "Report Abuse" button. :)

Well, I'm "working" which is to say I sat down to work and got a Skype call. So I'm going to finish this Skype call and then continue beating my head against the brick wall that I've been working on most of the afternoon.
