What is the chain rule and when should it be used? An example would be lovely :)

The name "chain rule" is the name given to the derivation formula of a composition of two differentiable functions:

I was given the example of f(x) = 4cos(5x-2) for the chain rule. What am I supposed to do?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The outer layer is ``the cos function'' and the inner layer is (5x-2) . Differentiate ``the cos function'' first, leaving (5x) unchanged. Then differentiate (5x) . ) Thus:

i men 5x-2

you can do it; or ihave to detail?.
