python is a great first language, I personally found it a lot more intuitive, though C is obviously a more powerful contender. For anyone looking to get into programming via python I've always sworn by the guide at http://learnpythonthehardway.org/. Though it depends on your desired application as there are many good tutorials specifically catered to people with certain interests. http://www.wag.caltech.edu/home/rpm/python_course/ is another good one, while a little less up to date.
