Compare what was happening in America during the Civil Rights era to another race, ethnicity, gender or group that in your opinion are still oppressed today. What topic do you think would be best to write about?

i think women are oppressed in Middle Eastern countries because of the dogmatic religious despots who rule many of those countries. actually, men and women alike are treated like dirt in those countries, but women get the brunt of it. the reasons for it? religious leaders tend to be sexist men, which is why women are oppressed in many countries. human beings are not naturally so especially sexist to females. the united states? nah, we are not what we used to be. we need to fix our problems here.

Maybe not as directly or violently as was racial discrimination, but the atheist community is very discriminated against in mainstream society. Allow me to explain... You can even see this in your average P&S "Do you believe in God?" poll. Typically, those who state 'no' have an incredibly disproportionate amount of thumbs-downs. But the discrimination goes a bit further than just internet forums. Ponder this: An 'out of the closet' atheist could never become President anywhere in the near future. In fact, I think that a god-fearing actor would be elected to office by landslide even if his opponent was an incredibly well qualified open atheist. Atheists right now are the largest minority in America. When I say largest minority, I mean we outnumber blacks, asians, jews, homosexuals, you name it. So where's our representation? I'm not sure of the exact number of congressmen who are atheist, but I know that it's probably less than 3. "In God We Trust" is still printed on our money. There is virtually no respect for the American Atheist. This really, really needs to change, seeing as our voices should be heard just as loudly as any one else's in government. Lets face it- you don't need to believe in God to know what's best for your community... but many well-qualified, intelligent people are rendered silent by the religious majority who believe that in order to care, you need to fear the same irrational thing they do.
