I think you would just see if b^2-4ac is negative if it isn't then there is a max or min for the first step
differentiate the function and find the 'x' for which the differentiated function is 0. those 'x' values will be where f(x) either has a local minima or a local maxima. then check the nature of graph to see if it's a maxima or a minima.

the intercept of f'(x) is a max or min for f(x) because the rate of change is zero at a max or min so apoorvk is right you find the zeros of the derivative.
