What is the length of the portion BC of the cloth?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Cos?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

For this question you would have use sine not cos \[\sin 38= BC \div 5\] BC= 5*sin38 Sin 38=0.6156 BC= 5*0.6156 BC=3.078 Therfefore the length of cloth is =3.078

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5/sin 38?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No 5 multiplied by sin 38

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ohhh alright i see

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Look it is fairly simple \[\sin \theta\] of any angle is given by perpendicular divided by hypotenuse in this your perpendicular is BC and hypotenuse is AC so just multiply sin 38 by 5 and you have your answer

Okay let's clear this once and for all, I think you have trouble understanding which one we call the base, and which is the altitude, whicle assuming sin, tan and cos in trigo. |dw:1337412751532:dw|1. THE HYPOTENUSE - this is the longest side - always OPPOSITE TO THE RIGHT ANGLE. 2. ALTITUDE - The side opposite to the right angle, which DOES NOT CONTAIN THE CONTAIN THETA. 3. BASE - side containing the angle theta!! \[sin(\theta) = \frac {altitude}{hypotenuse.}\]
