Monica has a lawn, ABCD. She has placed a watering hose, BD. -Monica plans to put a fence along the length AD of her lawn. What is the length of the fence required?

OpenStudy (lalaly):

First find BD .. do you know how?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah one second

OpenStudy (anonymous):

30*

OpenStudy (lalaly):

yess:D ... now you have an angle and a side of a right triangle... What do u think we should do?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

use a trig function?

OpenStudy (lalaly):

yeh which one?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hmm.. either sec or cosec?

OpenStudy (lalaly):

well you want to find AD and you have BD remember Sine=opposite/hypotenuse cosine= adjacent/hypotenuse Tan=opposite / adjacent so for the angle 60 and the sides AD and BD which one do u think will work?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

cosine? lol

OpenStudy (lalaly):

lol Do u know what the length of the hypotenuse is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh. so its tangent!

OpenStudy (lalaly):

Exactly:D

OpenStudy (lalaly):

so AD=?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

30 tan 60?

OpenStudy (lalaly):

\[\tan( \theta )=\frac{opposite}{adjacent}\]opposite =30 adjacent=AD so\[\tan(60)=\frac{30}{AD}\]therefore \[AD=\frac{30}{\tan(60)}\]

Thank you >.<!

OpenStudy (lalaly):

:D ur welcome
