Remember Pythagoras?
OpenStudy (sup_open~study):
a2 + b2 = c2 ??
OpenStudy (saifoo.khan):
Yes.
OpenStudy (amorfide):
split into right angled triangles
xz=yw
so you have one side 15 and one side 8
you want to work out the hypotonuse
a²+b²=c²
8²+15²=289
square root 289 to get c
c=17

use pythagoras theorem
since opposite sides of a rectangle are equal
base=15 inches and altitude=8 inches
Applying pythagoras theorem
\[15^{2}+8^{2} =h^{2} \]
\[\sqrt{289}\]
=17
therefore length of diagonal is 17
