A square with each side measuring 10 inches has a red piece x inches long removed and a blue piece x inches long added as shown in the figure below. Find the area of the white and blue rectangle.

OpenStudy (mathhelp346):

i tried (10+x)-(10-x) but i keep getting 2x and that doesn't seem right

OpenStudy (amorfide):

i would love a picture, it is only fair since you get one ?

OpenStudy (mathhelp346):

OpenStudy (amorfide):

i have no idea i would assume you would have to do something along the lines of figuring out the area and perimeter in terms of x?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

new width = 10-x new length = 10+x area = (10-x)(10+x)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

why x=10?

OpenStudy (amorfide):

ignore me :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (mathhelp346):

thanks

OpenStudy (mathhelp346):

so 100-x^2 is the answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(10-x)(10+x) = 100-x^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes!

OpenStudy (mathhelp346):

ok
