I need help with inequalities and finding the interval solution x^2-3x>=4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

first, solve this EQUALITY: x^2 -3x -4 = 0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you do that?

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

it can be written \[x^2 - 3x - 4\ge 0\] factorise and then a simple method is to choose a point sy x = 1 and test the solution in this case x = 1: -6>= 4 false so x = 1 isn't in the solution so its x<= -1 and x >= 4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

just a note (i'm not being picky here): the solution set to the inequality is the union of those two sets so it should be written as: x <= -1 OR x >= 4
