When solving systems of equations, how do you determine what method to use?

OpenStudy (oaktree):

It depends on the system.

OpenStudy (oaktree):

If you have one variable plainly in terms of the other, like y = 3x -4, then use substitution.

OpenStudy (oaktree):

However, if you have two equations where the variables have the same or similar signs, then use elimination.

And if you're lazy, use graphing with a graphing calculator. Or WolframAlpha, alternatively.
