what indicates that sound waves are longitudinal?

OpenStudy (egenriether):

The direction the molecules vibrate when the wave travels. Sound is a pressure wave, it makes the molecules vibrate back and forth (not up and down) along the direction of travel. A transverse wave on the other hand is like a rope that is jerked up and down on one end. The wave will travel along the rope but the motion of the wave is perpendicular to the direction of travel.
