Why (a) the eigenvalues of a symmetric matrix are real? (b) the eigenvectors of symmetric matrix corresponding to different eigenvalues are orthogonal?

standard proof shows that \(\overline{\lambda}=\lambda\) which will show they are real. a quick google search will give you lots of worked out proofs
