i answered a question of find the reciprocal of 1/7 as 7/1..why is it wrong ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

why ? (not in a snobby way lol) just not sure how it becomes a negative

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Who is telling wrong!!! It is absolutely CORRECT.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

i guess you can say 7/1 = 7, but you are correct nonetheless

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the reciprocal of a positive number gives you a negative number? i didnt know that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i work out of a program called mymathlab.....and it says my answer is wrong....but im going to try it time

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

chances are the program is very very picky and wants only one answer (even though there are 2 possible ways to answer this)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@breebree8 how does it become a negative becuz im confused on this one...maybe if it was broken down for me...but so many ppl r helping im not sure wht to do lol

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

the reciprocal of a/b is b/a...the sign does NOT change

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so the reciprocal of 1/7 is 7/1 which can be written as 7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it wud be 7

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
