I don't think we should, because that lets people just randomly give medals for pointless causes. It allows the users to evaluate who answered the best and makes them think more about the medals they are giving and not just "wasting" them. (they're valuable ;D)

True...hmmm...well what about we allow two medals. One for "best" answer and one for "good answer" and the "Best" answer can be worth like 2 medlas or the good answer can be worth half a medal xD
