Why do compounds have new names ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What kind of compounds do you mean? chemical compounds?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes, chemical compounds

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't really understand what the question is asking - "new" names as opposed to "old" names?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

for instance why do chemical compounds have different names from each other ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, that is how they are identified. Like objects, you wouldn't want two different things sharing the same name - there would be a lot of confusion if that was the case.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Does it have anything to do with the different types of elements and compounds ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, different elements will make different compounds. Also, the same types of elements can combine in multiple ways (different structures) to make multiple compounds.

K, thanks!!
