The Confederacy would not use slaves as soldiers. They were afraid that the slaves would defect to the Union's side because of the possibility of attaining freedom and greater rights in the future.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Plus, given the circumstances, arming slaves did NOT seem like a good idea.
