Mathematics 6 Online
OpenStudy (anonymous):

-2|-6x| and x = 5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What do you need to do? Do you need to prove it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (amistre64):

plugging in "x" was good, but what happened after that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Shoot..forgot the - symbol on the 6, my bad.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

what is the absolute value of -6 * 5?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Umm..whos the question directed to? lol.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

you goodman :) your answer has me worried alittle

OpenStudy (anonymous):

30 right?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

30 is right, now what is -2 * 30?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-60

OpenStudy (amistre64):

and that is what we should get for an answer; how you got to +- 180 tho ... has me worried

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh wow...now i see, lol. Im sorry.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Then all you need to do is plug in 5 when ever x shows up. -2|-6x| -2|6(5)| -2|30| 2*30 or 2*-30 +/-60

OpenStudy (amistre64):

there is no +- option. -2 * 30 = -60. there is no other way around it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Really? I was taught that when doing an absolute value, its gonna be +/- Hmm..im confused.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

if we were trying to determine solutions for x we would most likely have a +- option; but as is, we are told the value of x and want the results for that value

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ohhh okay, although, when i was doing this kind of problem last year, i noticed our teacher made us give a +/- when the solution was positive..maybe it was my teacher, i dunno.
